AI Standings is a public poll. It has no accounts, no ads and no analytics or tracking scripts. This page explains the little it does collect, why, and for how long.
Who runs it
AI Standings is run by Sevval Kapankaya, who is responsible for your data under the GDPR. For anything on this page, use the contact form.
When you visit
- No cookies just for visiting. Looking at the standings sets no cookie.
- Visitor and online counts. To count visitors and show who is online, we make a one-way hash of your IP address and browser type, mixed with a secret and the date. It can't be turned back into either, changes every day, and can't link your visits across days. The online record is deleted after an hour, the daily record once the day is over. Only the running total is kept.
- Browser storage. We store one small value in your browser so the email bar doesn't keep reappearing after you close it or sign up. It never leaves your device.
- Hosting. The site runs on Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes your IP address to deliver pages and block attacks. We don't receive or keep it.
When you vote
- A vote cookie. When you vote, we set one cookie,
as_vid. It holds a random ID, signed so it can't be forged, so you hold exactly one vote and can change or remove it later. It is needed for the vote you asked for, lasts one year, and is never shared or used for advertising. - Bot check. Votes pass Cloudflare Turnstile, which checks your browser for signs of automation. See Cloudflare's Turnstile privacy notice.
- What we store. Your choice, the ID from your vote cookie, the time, and your country (worked out from your IP address by Cloudflare; we store only the country code).
- Your network. To limit votes per network each day, we store a one-way hash of your IP address mixed with a secret and the date. It can't be turned back into the address, changes every day, and is erased once the day is over. Raw IP addresses are never stored.
- How long. Your vote stays until you remove it. You can do that at any time from the page.
The Thursday email
If you sign up, we store your email address, the time, your country and, if you have voted, the ID from your vote cookie, and send you a link to confirm. You get one email a week with the top 3 and their news. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe link. After you unsubscribe, your address is deleted within 30 days. Emails are sent through Resend, our email provider.
When you contact us
We store your reason, email address, name if you give one, your message, your country and the time, and forward the message to our inbox so we can reply. Messages are deleted after 12 months.
Why we are allowed to
- Votes, the vote cookie, the bot check and the network limit: our legitimate interest in running a fair poll that bots can't flood (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)). The cookie is strictly necessary to provide the vote you ask for, so it needs no separate consent.
- Visitor and online counts: our legitimate interest in showing live activity, using only daily hashes that can't identify you (Art. 6(1)(f)).
- The Thursday email: your consent (Art. 6(1)(a)). You can withdraw it at any time by unsubscribing.
- Contact messages: our legitimate interest in answering you (Art. 6(1)(f)).
Who else handles data
- Cloudflare hosts the site, the database and the bot check.
- Resend sends the Thursday email and contact notifications.
Both are US companies. Transfers rely on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and the European Commission's standard contractual clauses. We don't sell data and don't share it with anyone else. Fonts are served from this site, not from Google. Headlines are fetched from Google News by our server, so your browser never contacts Google; clicking a headline takes you to the publisher's site, which has its own policy.
Published results
The standings, vote totals and machine-readable snapshots (JSON, Markdown) contain only counts per lab. Nothing in them identifies anyone.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct, export or delete your data, restrict or object to how we use it, and withdraw consent. Use the contact form. Because we don't know who you are, to find your vote we may ask you to send the request from the browser you voted in. You can also complain to a data protection authority. In Portugal, where AI Standings is run, that is the Comissão Nacional de Proteção de Dados (CNPD).
Changes
If this page changes, the date at the top changes with it.
